Walking Stick Kale (Brassica oleracea longata) is a unique, fast-growing perennial plant that can thrive in New Zealand’s temperate, subtropical, or Mediterranean climate. Here are some key growing points to consider:
- Climate: Walking Stick Kale is hardy in New Zealand’s hardiness zones 6-10a, making it suitable for most regions.
- Planting: Spring planting (September to November) and autumn planting (February to April) are recommended, as the soil temperatures are ideal for germination and growth.
- Soil:Â Well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is suitable for Walking Stick Kale.
- Watering:Â Regular watering with a big amount of water is necessary, especially during hot summer months.
- Sun exposure:Â Full sun to partial shade is acceptable, but ensure the area receives at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight.
- Staking:Â As the plant grows, its weight will cause the stalk to bend. Provide support by staking the plant to maintain its upright growth and prevent damage.
- Fertilization:Â Feed the plant every three weeks with a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth.
- Harvest:Â Walking Stick Kale produces edible leaves, which can be harvested throughout the growing season. The ornamental tuft of leaves at the top can be used as a natural cane handle.
