Red Kakabeak (Clianthus puniceus) is a shrub that requires a sunny spot and protection from frost. It can be grown from seeds, which need to be stratified in a moist paper towel for 24 hours after soaking in hot water. Keep the seeds constantly moist during germination.
Ecological Patterns
As an endangered species, Red Kakabeak has adapted to grow in shrublands that are frequently disturbed. Its long-lived seeds can remain viable for up to 30 years, creating a seed bank that allows the plant to recolonize areas when conditions are suitable.
Cultivation
For cultivation, provide a sunny spot and protect the plant from frost. Sowing seeds requires a brief soaking in hot water followed by cooling in lukewarm water, then wrapping in a moist paper towel for 24 hours.
Traditional Use
In Maori culture, Red Kakabeak (also known as Ngutuk?k?) was used for gifting and trading, indicating its importance in pre-human distribution. Today, efforts are underway to restore the species to its natural habitats, with the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Ngutuk?k? Recovery Group working together to promote its recovery.
Conservation Status
Red Kakabeak is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Conservation efforts focus on restoring populations in its natural habitats, including bluffs and cliffs, with the goal of seeing the species flourish in these areas within the next five to 10 years.
