Rue
July 23, 2024Red currants are slightly more sour than its relative the black currant, and is cultivated mainly for jams and cooked dishes.
How to grow – Currants can be grown in areas that may be too wet and shady for other fruit. They require moderate watering. Red Currants grow best in locations that receive morning sun and afternoon shade, or dappled shade part of the day. They prefer heavier soil types like rich clay with a good thick mulch. Can be planted as a hedge. Space plants 1 metre apart for a hedge or about 2 metres for an individual plant. Plant and mulch well to suppress weeds and keep the roots cool.
Red Currants do not require a lot of fertilising just annually with a Citrus fertiliser. Rich in Vitamin C – the darker the colour of fruit the better for you.
Requires 800-1500 chilling hours. The number of flowers and fruit set are reduced if there is a lack of winter chill.
