Okinawa Spinach (Hong tsoi) -$5
A perennial Vegetable that does great with a bit of heat or growing in a tunnel house. It can be eaten in salads, blanched or lightly stir fried. It is a member of the daisy family (not spinach) and has tastes of carrots and parsley, with a hint of pine.
It is native to Southeast Asia with medicinal properties.
Folk law suggests it can be used in fighting cancer cancer treatment this cancer-fighting plant is used extensively both as medicine and food in Chinese culture. Traditional Chinese Medicine, the leaves are viewed as a cooling culinary ingredient and are consumed to reduce swelling, detox the body, and stimulate blood flow.
We love to grow it but we do need to plant it in one of our tunnel houses, it is a subtropical plant after all.
For reference, our property and nursery is at 300 m elevation, in the foothills of the Tararuas. If you are in Wellington and warmer frost free areas it should do fine.
