Ironwort (Sideritis scardica) is a perennial herb that grows in the mountains at high altitudes over 1000 m a.s.l. endemically on the Balkan Peninsula. It is a xerophytic plant that occurs mainly in the Mediterranean area, on the islands of Macaronesia, and in western and central Asia. The genus Sideritis includes more than 150 species of annual or perennial xerophytic and thermophytic plants naturally growing in mountain areas.
Use of Ironwort
Ironwort has been traditionally used in folk medicine, most often in the form of aromatic herbal tea. It is commonly used in the Balkans and the Middle East for the preparation of herbal tea for strengthening the body and improving the mood. In Bulgaria, it is considered an aphrodisiac. The plant is also used to aid digestion, strengthen the immune system, and suppress common cold, flu, and other viruses.

Ironwort has antioxidant properties, which help in reducing the harmful effects of free radicals. It is a good herbal remedy for sore throat and has been traditionally used to treat various health issues, including cancer, libido, inflammation and pain, bones, blood pressure, Alzheimers, cold and flu, stomach problems, anxiety, and depression.
