Tagetes lemmonii, or Lemmon’s Marigold Seeds. Perennial
January 6, 2025
Garlic 1 sqm planting area – 1 type only.
February 20, 2025We will have limited amounts of garlic available this season. Ideally, one square metre of planting is 36 cloves of garlic.  We’ve made it easy for you, if you would like garlic ready for planting without worrying about smaller cloves in bulbs then this is the option to buy.
We have three types of garlic available and as growers and garlic conisures find these give a great mix of storage capacity for the home kitchen. Each type comes with planting instructions.
NZ early Purple – We love this, when fresh it has a very pungent taste and beautiful purple skin, as it drys the skins dull. This garlic  is a quick growing hard neck that grows ok in most areas of the country. It is however a semi bolting hard neck which means it typically sends up scapes a few weeks to month before harvest. This garlic should have its scapes cut off (you can eat these though). Cutting them means the garlic puts its energy into bulb development. This garlic will likely still be suseptible to rust but its fast growth mewans bulbs are usually well on the way to developing before rust hits. It makes it ideal to grow in northern regoins. We still get large bulbs even if they rust.
Storage – short to medium term is the only downside to this garlic. We look to plant in March/April, harvest by Christmas and its loosing its flavour and storage ability to 6 months later. We do end up with some witches broom in this garlic, but the shprter storage window means its not usually a problem and doesn’t seem to reduce its storage capacity.
Artichoke – Named after the appearance of the clove layer pattern which looks a bit like an artichoke flower bud. It is a mid season spft neck that will grow in most areas. Artichokes prpduce anywhere from 2 to 15 cloves per bulb. We tend to get solos with our ones too, which can mean more nutritional value per clove. Cloves can be large. Milder flavour. Great for braiding
Storage – 7 to 9 months when stored correctly.
Printanor – The most common type for home growers but also trickier to grow as it is more suseptible to rust requiring a longer growing window. This can mean that bulbs dont become large. It is a tasty garlic with white to pink cloves and a mild flavor. Originally a french heirloom. We like to grow this as it does have longer storage capacity than our others.
Storage – eight to nine months but we have had it keep for a year.
You will get a mixture of all four types of garlic or 12 cloves of each type and growing/harvest instructions. If you would like more or less of each type please comment in the check out. We can do our best but no gaurantees.
Please note – All our garlic is grown spray free with organic principals but not certified organic. We grow our garlic on a friends market garden, Bird Song Farms. Rust unfortunalty is often inevitable. We had rust in the 2024 season for the first time. It is important to note, that rust does not spread on seed. Only on living green matter.
