Waiapu natives say that wood used for fashioning a flute taken from a tree growing in an exposed condition (Best 1925). Bark used as brown dye (Wall, Cranwell 1943), horse feed and green wood to make skids for hauling canoes (Best 1925). Plants are host to endemic caterpillar.
Growing Conditions:
Evergreen, small, round-headed tree with smooth, dark five-fingered green leaflets. Purple-black fruit that birds love. Under canopy tree. Hardy.
Origin:
Plants eco sourced in Upper Hutt/Wellington.
