English Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) can thrive in many conditions in New Zealand. It prefers a sunny position, making it suitable for open areas or edges of forests. It can tolerate a range of soils, from well-draining to moist, and is relatively drought-tolerant.
Propagation
English Hawthorn can be propagated by seed, which should be gathered when ripe and stratified for 18 months before sowing in early Spring. This process mimics natural winter chilling, increasing the chances of successful germination.
Pest and Disease Management
Be aware that English Hawthorn can be prone to leafspot, rust, and powdery mildew. Regular monitoring and prompt treatment can help manage these issues.
Cultivation
English Hawthorn is a deciduous shrub or small tree, growing up to 10 meters tall. It has hairless, triangular leaves with 3-7 deep lobes, which are solitary on long stems. The plant produces attractive red fruit, attractive to birds.
Regulations
In the Auckland region, it is prohibited to breed, distribute, release, or sell English Hawthorn, and planting is only allowed if transferring an existing plant within the same property. Outside of Auckland, cultivation is generally permitted. However, it is essential to check local regulations and ensure compliance.
Control Methods
If English Hawthorn is considered a weed in a specific area, control methods may be necessary. For small-scale infestations, cut stump treatment with 5g metsulfuron-methyl per 1 L of water can be effective. For larger areas, herbicides containing picloram and triclopyr may be used, following the recommended application rates and guidelines.
Similar Species
Other cultivars, such as Crataegus laevigata (pink, double-flowered), barberry, and boxthorn, may resemble English Hawthorn. However, English Hawthorn is characterized by its multilobed triangular leaves and red fruit.
