Dyers Chamomile is a hardy perennial plant that can grow in a variety of soils, but it does best in well-drained soil with a neutral pH. It prefers full sun to partial shade, so it is best to plant it in a location that gets at least six hours of sunlight a day.
Sowing and Transplanting
Dyers Chamomile grows very quickly from seed and can be grown as an annual. Sow in March indoors and, when large enough, transplant outside to a sunny position spacing about 30 cm apart. Alternatively, sow in May to July, plant out during September and October, and they will flower in the next summer.
Caring for Dyers Chamomile
Dyers Chamomile is a low-maintenance plant that requires minimal care. Water it regularly, but make sure the soil is not waterlogged. Fertilize it sparingly, as it can be prone to over-fertilization.
Using Dyers Chamomile
Dyers Chamomile is primarily used as a dye plant, and its flowers can be used to create a range of yellow shades. The yellows obtained from dry or fresh flowers are strong and crisp, making it an excellent choice for over-dyeing with cochineal or indigo. The plant is also more light-fast than many yellow dyes, making it a popular choice for natural dyeing.
Additional Information
Dyers Chamomile has pretty daisy-like flowers and aromatic feathery blue-green leaves. It can grow up to 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) in height and is a hardy perennial. It is also sometimes known as the Golden Marguerite or Yellow Chamomile.
