German chamomile is an annual herb that is easy to grow from seed. Here are some tips to help you grow this lovely herb:
Starting Seeds: German chamomile seeds can be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last average frost date. Place the seeds in 4-inch pots filled with damp potting mix. Do not cover them as they need light to germinate. Keep them at a temperature between 60 to 75 degrees and evenly moist.
Lighting: Once the seedlings emerge, they will need ample sun. Place them in a bright, south- or west-facing window or under grow lights.
Transplanting: Transplant the seedlings outdoors after the last danger of frost. Space them 12 inches apart.
Soil: German chamomile prefers well-drained, sandy soil with a pH between 5.6 to 7.5.
Watering: Chamomile is fairly drought-tolerant, but it does better if watered during dry spells.
Care: Chamomile is an easy-to-grow plant that requires little care. It does best in full sun but also tolerates light shade.
Harvesting Seeds: To harvest seeds for the next growing season, wait until the flowers dry up on the stem and clip them. Shake the seeds loose and store them in a cool, dry place. Use them within three to four years.
By following these simple steps, you can successfully grow German chamomile and enjoy its lovely flowers and fragrant tea.
