Morus nigra, also known as the black mulberry, is a deciduous tree that grows up to 12 meters (39 feet) tall by 15 meters (49 feet) broad. It prefers temperate or Mediterranean climates and can thrive in hardiness zones 5-10. The tree requires full sun to partial shade, well-drained soil, and moderate watering.
Vegetative Reproduction
Morus nigra can be propagated through vegetative reproduction. To do so, cut a branch with a node (where a leaf meets the stem) and plant it in a pot filled with moist soil. Keep the soil moist and provide half shade or light. Once the branch grows leaves, you can transplant it to a larger pot or directly into the ground.
Cultivation
Morus nigra is cultivated worldwide for its edible fruits. The tree is also used as a source of food for silkworms, although the silk produced is of lesser quality compared to that of the white mulberry (Morus alba). The leaves of Morus nigra can be used as cattle fodder.
Fruit Characteristics
The fruit of Morus nigra is a compound cluster of several small drupes that are dark purple, almost black when ripe. Each drupe is approximately 2.5 cm (1 in) in diameter. The fruit is richly flavored, similar to the red mulberry (Morus rubra), and is often eaten fresh or used in jams and preserves.
Other Uses
In addition to its edible fruits and silkworm food, Morus nigra has other uses. The leaves of the tree can be used as a natural dye, and the wood is valued for its durability and resistance to rot.
