Betony (Stachys officinalis) is a hardy perennial that can grow up to 3 feet (91 cm) tall, with a rosette of slightly scalloped leaves that produce a long stalk with clumps of flowers in shades of purple to white. It can be grown from seed in autumn or spring, or propagated from cuttings or divided clumps in spring. Once planted, betony plants will self-seed and spread slowly in the same area.
Growing Conditions
Betony prefers shady areas with neutral to acidic soils. It can also grow well in containers as long as the potting mix is good quality and the plant is regularly fed. The plant blooms for several months, so it needs to be well-fed to maintain its color and vitality.
Care and Maintenance
To care for betony, water well after planting and keep the soil consistently moist. Avoid extreme shade, as this can cause the plant to become leggy. Deadheading the plant can help keep it looking tidy and prevent pests.
Use of Betony
Betony has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties. The leaves, flowers, and stalks of the plant can be used fresh or dried to make a tea that is said to warm and soothe the body. It is also thought to aid concentration and was once used as a catch-all herbal medicine.
Other Uses
Betony can also be used as a bee-friendly wildflower in a native wildflower border or meadow area. Its flowers are particularly favored by the solitary wool carder bee (Anthidium manicatum), which sometimes nests in bee hotels. The plant can also be dried and used as an herb in cooking.
Harvesting
The leaves, flowers, and stalks of the betony plant can be harvested fresh or dried for later use. The dried plant can be used to make tea, or added to other dried herbs for a tonic and refresher.
