Smyrnium olusatrum, 5 cm pot. Horse Parsley and Black Lovage. Frost hardy culinary herb originating from continental Europe. Steeped in historical uses and tradition. Popular during the time of Alexander the Great and was introduced to Britain by the Romans.

Entire plant is edible, with a taste between celery and parsley. The leaves, stems and young shoots can be used like celery, raw in salads or cooked in soups, seeds can be used as a pepper substitute. All parts can also be used to make syrups, wine and beer.

Medicinally, used as a bitter herb to aid digestion. Traditionally juice is also used to clean wounds.
